About AMIE

Association for Mentoring and Inclusion in Economics (AMIE)

Co-founded by Priya Mukherjee (Assistant Professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Nishith Prakash (Associate Professor of Economics, University of Connecticut), AMIE aims to address various gaps in the economics profession for Ph.D. students, especially those from underrepresented minorities (URM), LGBTQIA++ community, first-generation college, and international students. AMIE’s activities will be demand-driven, that is, based on gaps identified in surveys that will be conducted among PhD students and recent graduates in Economics.

In the near term, it aims to:

  1. Provide opportunities to present work and receive high quality feedback from senior economists in the profession

  2. Provide opportunities to receive mentoring (for e.g., publication, preparation for the job market, collaboration, etc.) and networking

  3. Raise awareness around mental health and general well-being

Acknowledging potential challenges and gaps that may be unique to PhD students from underrepresented minorities (URM), LGBTQIA++ community (broadly defined), first-generation college, or from nationalities outside of the US, AMIE will undertake the following activities in the medium to long run:

  1. Conduct surveys to identify gaps in the professional development of PhD students and junior scholars in Economics

  2. Start a Working Paper Series

  3. Provide scholarships to fund conference travel

  4. Offer funding for small pilot projects

  5. Help establish research collaborations with members of AMIE

  6. A newsletter that facilitates the professional development of PhD students and junior scholars in Economics (which would complement the newsletters and other materials that are shared by other organizations such as CSWEP, CSMGEP etc.)
