Britney Spears has had a long and hard battle against her father in a battle for her own financial assets as well as her own person. For years, she had little to no control over her life. From not being able to get her nails done, to choosing her own therapist; Britney Spears lacked any sort of control in her life. Her battle for her conservatorship is a stain on our judicial system, and reform must be done in regards to conservatorship abuse and having those in conservatorship more accessible means of escaping such cases.
A judge ordered yesterday that Britney Spears would be finally allowed to choose her own legal counsel, and has filed charges against her father for conservatorship abuse. She has seen a boost of confidence due to the outpouring mainstream support, and it is safe to say the world is watching for justice to be served.
Britney Spears has highlighted a horrific problem occurring in the United States that has not seen the mainstream attention its received due to Spears' confidence and defiance against her father's abuse. Conservatorship leaves those in control with immense amounts of power for prolonged periods of time over another person's life. Reforms must be made. Not only for Britney Spears; but for the 1.2 million people under conservatorship who relate and have experienced her pain.
Conservatorship sometimes saves lives, protecting those who can not protect themselves. Some conservators are selfless human beings, caring for the sake of another human being in every shape and form. However, we can not allow those who have held onto the abusive power it brings any longer. Justice must be served, reforms must be made.
Britney Spears has faced a tough battle against her father and her conservatorship, even with the constant support she received by fans and supporters across the globe. Yet still we stand here today; reading articles regarding her fight. Still to this day, she fights for her right to her own person. Even a historic pop icon can not fight the battle against conservatorship, now imagine those who have no one but their conservators. We must protect those who can not protect themselves, we must.
