Ten years after the end of the civil war, many civil war officers turned their attention to war with the Indians out West. One such officer who served at Gettysburg and was present at Appomattox Courthouse was General George Armstrong Custer.
It came to the attention of the American authorities that the Black Hill Mountains sat on prosperous gold mines that could lead to tremendous prosperity for the United States. The complication was that the Black Hills were populated by the Sioux Indians, who weren’t willing to leave.
