INSTRUCTIONS:
From the end of the Civil War to the End of World War I, the United States engaged in imperialistic activities, that is, measures designed to expand its territories around the world.
Some of this was done in military fashion, but not all. Through the list of historical events below, each of you will re-decide whether what the U.S. did in this era was best.
Each student will take turns being the "decider" in a series of dilemmas that leaders actually faced in the era of Imperialism.
1. After understanding the decision needed to be made, the decider should go around the room and ascertain the opinion of your advisors.
2. If you are aware of the actual history, the decisions and their outcomes, pretend that you are not. You are not being challenged to make the same decision that was made, but the best decision, whether or not it was the same or different.
3. Once you’ve heard everyone’s opinions, announce your decision, saying “that’s my final answer.”
4. The teacher will click to the next link revealing what the actual historic decision of the leader was.
A video clip will be provided to portray the actual historic decision.
CLASS DISCUSSION: Compare your decision with the actual history. Do you think your decision was better or worse than that which actually happened?
