The island of Cuba is only 90 miles from the tip of Florida. The United States would prefer that Cuba be more under the control of the U.S. than under it’s colonial mother country, Spain.
In the 1890s Americans begin to instigate for Cuba's independence, somewhat like the American Revolution, wherein they declare their independence of the King of Spain. Cubans are reluctant insofar as they feel incapable of prevailing in such a contest.
The U.S. attempts to assure the Cubans that it “has their backs.”
