Student's diagram and description of the lobes of the brain, displaying the diversity and complexity of content that catalyzed and captures their dramatic academic growth.
The effectiveness of a teacher is substantially reflected in the academic growth that students make as a consequence of instruction. Such growth is demonstrable both quantitatively and qualitatively. As a science educator, the amassing and analysis of empirical data is particularly important. It enables me to evaluate my own performance, enables evaluators to gauge my professional competence and, most importantly, enables me to provide my students with measurable indices of their academic and intellectual progress.
Though less amenable to numerical analysis, qualitative assessment of student performance is undoubtedly important, especially owing to its linkage to literacy and the challenges of integrating literary content into science instruction. Nevertheless, I have endeavored to make literacy enhancement a central component of my pedagogic practice and this is reflected in the improvements evident in my students’ reading, writing, and speaking performance.
Through rigorous, observant, student-centered, data-driven teaching practices I was able to effectuate dramatic academic growth in my students as shall be demonstrated in this section of the Portfolio.
Several Student Reflections
The dramatic academic gains exemplified by my students combined with my measurement and rigorous promotion of this growth mark me as a truly transformative teacher. My mission has been to open every door available to my students that will eventuate in the improvement of their existence. The evidence displayed herein—quantitative and qualitative—confirms the veracity of my conviction that my mission has met with measurable success.
Seeing and participating in the astounding academic growth of my students--many of whom have had negative experiences with science and developed a distaste for and distrust of science--is among the most prized accomplishments of my teaching career. I celebrated them for this in a manner mirroring a proud parent and I am faintly displeased that I had not the presence of mind to take pictures of our party. Fortunately, in an unbidden gesture marking maturity and thoughtfulness many of my students took the time to express their gratitude to me in words that I will always treasure. I have selected but a few for display.
