I am a Doctoral Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Hunter College CUNY. My research explores the relationships between language and cognition by following the development of deaf children. I am particularly interested in the consequences of early language deprivation -a persistent lack of access to signed and spoken language during critical early language learning years.
In the CLAS Lab we recognize role of developmental science, and the sciences in general, in dismantling the fundamentally racist, ableist, sexist, and classist nature of academic systems and the knowledge it produces. We approach our work on language acquisition from the understanding that the ground-laying work in our field has been made within these frameworks and they continue to influence the questions we ask and the way we conduct research in child development. We are committed to analyzing our work and others’ with the acknowledgement of these lenses and steering our sciences toward more ethical practices and inclusive knowledge.
