Amazonen in Berlin is an art collective founded by Chiara Faggionato and Lina Mazenett. The collective develops artistic, community-oriented and educational projects that critically engage with statues and artworks in public spaces and museum collections. Their work centres on reclaiming mythologies, particularly the figure of the Amazon warrior women, by recontextualising them from ecofeminist and decolonial perspectives. Their practice unfolds through participatory artistic formats such as walks, workshops, and experimental tours. These formats include collective and embodied practices, such as somatic exercises, storytelling activities, reading circles, tactile interactions, deep listening experiences and more.

Amazonen in Berlin has collaborated with various FLINTA* associations, curatorial initiatives, and art project spaces in Berlin, including Frauenkreise, ReRouting, Urbane Praxis and Barazani, and works in ongoing dialogue with the Altes Museum Berlin. Their projects have been funded by European and Berlin-based cultural grants, such as the EU Ecofeminist Movement Building Fund by WECF and the Berliner Projektfonds Kulturelle Bildung.

Why do the mythical Amazon warrior women and
the world's largest rainforest have the same name?

Our research project explores the connections between the Amazons, the warrior women of classical mythology, and the Amazon region, through an ecofeminist and decolonial lens. Taking statues and artworks of these legendary warrior women as a starting point, we invite participants to engage with them through participatory artistic practices in both public spaces and within the museum context. These figures simultaneously reveal gender stereotypes embedded in classical mythology, which is traditionally told from a male perspective, and colonial legacies, as the naming of the Amazon territory was itself a European projection rooted in this myth. Public spaces and museums also reproduce power dynamics and hierarchies. Through artistic walks, workshops and experimental tours, participants are invited to revisit the history, representations and mythology of both the Amazons and the Amazon territory, reflecting on the appropriation of women’s bodies and land from an ecofeminist and decolonial perspective.
