Timothy Gaynor has criticised Willard Price's depiction of the Amazon, writing that Price "exaggerates the perils posed by the Amazonian fauna to an absurdly hyperbolic degree. In this text the Amazon is a phantasmagoria of man-eating piranhas and anacondas that lie in wait to devour the hapless adventurers. Needless to say, the resourceful boy heroes see their way through this challenge while their "native" manservants perish horribly."[3] Referencing the passage where the Hunts purchase a shrunken head for museum display, Sandra Pannell notes the novel's "themes of collecting and cultural hegemony, appropriation and aesthetization".[4]

While I cannot completely capture all of the events and circumstances that Millard masterfully addresses in her book, this StoryMap will illuminate the highlights of Roosevelt's Amazon adventure in 1914. It took Roosevelt and the rest of the men almost exactly two months to traverse the nearly 1,000-mile Amazon tributary. Some of them barely survived, but they did it, and this is their story.

My peacock bass adventures will continue in October of 2023 and 2024. Currently the 2023 trip is full, but we are looking for a few trophy peacock bass hunters for 2024. This is not a trip for just anyone, but if you are interested, and more importantly up for the challenge, reach out to me for more information.

A dawn start is required for the boat transfer back to Puerto Maldonado, giving memorable views of sunrise over the river. Look out for the early morning wildlife, which is particularly active at this time. Howler monkeys are frequently heard as they stake out their territories. The adventure ends at Puerto Maldonado airport, where we say goodbye to our leader and take a short flight to Lima. A local representative transfers us to our hotel for the night.

This is an amazing trip visiting Cuzco, 5 days Inca trail including a night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes and 3 nights in Tambopata province (Amazon region) of Peru. My Son (12) and I had a fantastic adventure, thanks to all the hard work of our tour leader, porters and local guides. We were in a great company too, our lovely family group consisting of three other families.

If you are going with teenagers, the trip is slightly heavy on the "cultural side".......there are only so many museums/inca terraces my teenagers could cope with. There are other adventures available (zip wire/white water rafting/paragliding locally in the sacred valley, within a 80 min drive from Cusco. Our helpful tour leader booked one of these for us.Remember to check before you go to the airport for your return flights. We were with TAM air lines & it was only possible to do this 48 hrs before departure. We didn't have decent internet access & were busy out & about so we didn't do it! We checked in at the airport & all our 5 seats were all on different rows of the aircraft!
