Picture this!
A healthy meal has been prepared for you and your partner. She gets you comfortably positioned in your rocker with pillows so you can feed your baby, while you sip a warm cup of tea that she has just made for you.
Whether you are breastfeeding or formula feeding she is right there with you to help you get it just right. After a little while you hand over the baby to the doula for a diaper change and soothing. Your postpartum doula cares for the baby while you take a relaxing shower and then head off to the peace and comfort of your own bed for a much needed nap.
When you awake she brings your baby for her next feeding. The dishwasher is loaded and laundry folded while she listens to you tell her about your postpartum recovery. After talking with your postpartum doula you feel a sense of normalcy. You are doing a great job, and all the things you felt unsure about are a part of the journey.
Overnight Newborn Care is sometimes a new concept. Tired parents often approach us and ask: “what does an overnight postpartum doula do to care for their family while they sleep?” It almost sounds too good to be true! Rest assured, this exists and works beautifully.
The role of a postpartum doula varies from family to family, so it’s difficult to answer “what does a doula do?” A better question is, “what don’t you do?!”
The whole purpose of overnight newborn care is for the entire family to GET UNINTERRUPTED SLEEP! We will quietly take care of simple tasks to make your life easier. Then, our focus will be entirely on looking after your baby, allowing you to get a full night of sleep.
Your doula arrives and checks in quickly to find out how you are doing and tasks that need to be done overnight. You have questions about pumping and your doula shares her knowledge to help you carry on.
You discuss the list you’ve prepared which includes folding a load of baby clothes, wiping kitchen counters, and restocking the diaper bag with diapers, wipes and clean clothes. After telling her when the baby ate last and any other information she may need, you head off to bed knowing your baby is in great hands.
You snuggle and nurse for a bit. Your doula returns with a fresh glass of water for you and takes your baby back to their nursery. As you settle in to sleep again your doula is busy changing baby’s diaper, swaddling them, and soothing them back safely to sleep.
Before she leaves the nursery, she checks to make sure diapers and wipes are stocked and ready to go for the next day. She also grabs any used burp cloths and blankets to toss in the wash.
She’s completed everything you needed her to and everyone is fast asleep. So, your doula rests on the couch with a book or personal device. With the baby monitor nearby she’s able to hear your baby stirring, ready for their next meal. She brings your little one for their next nursing session and heads out to clean the pump parts in the sink. Once the baby is full, she returns and once again changes and soothes baby to sleep. Meanwhile you go right back to sleep!
When it’s time for your doula to leave in the morning everyone is asleep including baby. She ensures baby is secure and heads out without Interrupting your sleep. You wake to your baby’s cues to feed feeling rested and ready to take on the day.
Overnight care may look similar or completely different to you! We work closely with our clients to make sure we’re meeting your expectations and, most importantly, getting you the most sleep possible!
Receiving gift certificates towards doula services is a really special way in which friends and family can support a growing family. While baby socks are sweet, gifting a Postpartum Doula experience is an efficient way to give something that truly lasts beyond the first growth spurt! If your friend or family member put this on their gift registry, it's because they want it!
