The mission of the AmAuteur Film Festival is to uplift the voices of innovative, original cinematic artists operating on the fringe by providing a platform for their work to be seen, discussed, and appreciated. In the eyes of the festival, there is inherent value to all cinematic works regardless of the restrictions which may have impacted their creation, such as time, budget, and experience. While other film festivals often favor advanced technical and aesthetic considerations in their programming, the AmAuteur Film Festival strives to destigmatize and celebrate the tangible aspects of DIY, low-budget artistry by placing the filmmaker’s vision at the forefront.
We believe that filmmaking should be an accessible artistic medium for everyone and recognize the struggle that many aspiring filmmakers face in realizing their vision under preconceived limitations. As such, we celebrate the beauty, the community, and the authenticity of DIY creation, and hope to inspire the next generation of independent filmmakers to create art for art’s sake, with whatever resources and through whatever means necessary.

The AmAuteur team is composed of filmmakers, writers, artists, creatives, and general lovers of all things DIY art. Many fests poise themselves as “by filmmakers for filmmakers,” but our team is the real deal. We’re young, scrappy, wholly independent, and know exactly what it’s like to pour your heart and soul into a film without the privilege of loaded bank accounts and all the time in the world.

Our focus surrounds not only the planning, programming and execution of the in-person festival in Chicago, but also an unwavering commitment to supporting DIY filmmakers year-round through marketing initiatives and community building. As to avoid existing in a vacuum that only reveals itself once a year, we dedicate ourselves to the mission of spreading underground art that inspires, excites, and entertains day in and day out.
Why We Do It
Why We Do It
For the same reason we all tell stories and create: the sheer passion. We don’t exist to profit off of your art or promote our own projects. We simply love DIY artists and want to see them succeed. This is why the AmAuteur Film Festival vows to evenly distribute any earnings from submission fees, ticket costs, merchandise, and donations among officially selected filmmakers.
