My vintage jewelry collection really started around the time my sister and I opened our online vintage jewelry store, Maejean Vintage, in 2010. My collection is definitely smaller than I would ideally like, because I have such a hard time keeping pieces for myself! I know a lot of other sellers have that same guilty feeling when keeping a piece instead of selling it! Because of this, I only keep a piece in my collection if I absolutely ADORE it and it speaks to me on a personal level.

When I first started collecting, I was drawn to dainty and intricate pieces, mostly from the Art Deco Era. As my knowledge of different eras developed, so did my collection! My jewelry consists of pieces from the Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, Mid Century, and Modern eras. I am finding myself more drawn to bigger and bolder pieces as time goes on. I especially have a soft spot for rings!

Briefly, how would you describe yourself and your work?

I probably spend too much time curled up on the couch daydreaming with my kitty and hot water bottle, so naturally my work has a bit of a dreamy quality to it. I often like to imagine, especially on rainy days, that I am living in a wistful fairy tale, conjuring up fleeting stories about sopping trees and fluffy little animals scurrying around outside my window. That is how I like to think about my jewelry too, that it is part of some sort of secret and bewitching narrative that I have yet to discover.

Amanda Triossi: It might sound obvious, but the driving force behind my various and varied jewelry-related activities has always been my love for jewels. I never set out specifically to be either a jewelry historian, an author, a curator, a lecturer, or a consultant to luxury brands. These activities presented themselves in time, and, in a way, grew organically with my experience. Ultimately I am interested in furthering my knowledge and understanding in all aspects that relate to jewelry, and sharing this with others is what I like. The fun of this monothematic but varied career is that I am always challenged, I am always facing something new, but at the same time it is always jewelry!

Art Jewelry Forum is an organization dedicated to art jewelry, which is typically made by artists with training in jewelry and whose practices challenge conventional definitions of jewelry. How do you see art jewelry in relation to the history of Western jewelry design?

I believe jewelry tells a story and can instill a sense of confidence like no other accessory can. I make pieces that I personally love in the hopes that you will too. Quality and affordability is so important to me and the brand and I hope you can see that when you see the jewels.

Amanda Mounser has created the super edgy eponymous line of jewelry Mounser. Her creations are really unique and have some very special sculptural qualities that each season she reinvents with lots of imagination. As if it wasn't already exciting to go meet with her at her apartment to take the opportunity to learn more about the way she works, I got immersed in her super cool universe and appreciated how multi talented she really is. The bookshelves are filled with reference inspiration books, the walls are covered of artworks, so many being hers and there are beautiful unusual objects peppered everywhere. I didn't want to leave!
