Amanda Emery for Ward 3
City of Port Colborne Council
City of Port Colborne Council
This is my first time running for council and I'm proud to be running to represent you in Ward 3.
I've lived in Port Colborne for 17 years; over half of that time spent living in Ward 3. We've likely run into each other when I'm out walking my dog, attending community events, or volunteering. If we haven't met in person there's a great chance we've chatted online - I'm usually sharing community information wherever I can.
I'm no stranger to municipal work. I have a bachelor's degree with honours in political science and I'm well versed in methodology and research, as well as public policy, and administration. I have no interest in ever using this knowledge at the provincial or federal level, but I care deeply about our local community and feel I could make an impact with fresh ideas and insight at this level. I previously worked for the City of Port Colborne at both the museum and library in a variety of information sharing roles, often working closely with community groups and residents.
I'm looking to participate in an approachable, collaborative, prepared council that focuses on community and strengthening Port Colborne.
Volunteer Girl Guide leader for the 1st Port Colborne Embers
Port Colborne High School 100th Anniversary Committee
Previous Administrative Assistant for the Port Colborne Museum Auxiliary (the fantastic volunteers who run Arabella's Tea Room!)
Volunteer 'Snow Buddy' through Happy In My Home, Community Support Services of Niagara
Past Big Sister at Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Niagara
Assisted Port Colborne Legion Branch 56 as Community Liaison for their Veteran's Crosswalk project
I feel we've lost trust in some aspects of our municipality, and the small-town feeling of community is slipping away. I strive to increase transparency and participation in municipal politics. If elected, I will candidly share: Time spent reading council packages, attending events and meetings. Updates from committees I am on, including how citizens can share feedback and get involved. The amount of correspondence I receive/respond to.
Increased information on the process and work can help encourage future citizens to run for council, and helps with a feeling of connection to our representatives.
The Port Colborne Urgent Care Centre is slated to permanently close in 2028, when the new South Niagara Hospital opens in Niagara Falls. The future of equitable and 24/7 access to urgent care for residents is at risk. With 26.9% of our population aged 65+ and low-frequency public transit this is a major concern.
Current council has approved a new health plan, which aims to explore the idea of developing a Community Health Hub. I will continue to research these hubs and investigate the upcoming business case presented in the fall. It is imperative we retain 24/7 access, as well as diagnostic services, for our residents.
Port Colborne's water rates are the highest in the region, due largely to infrastructure decline over decades. There are ongoing repairs. I would like to see the community receive a comprehensive progress update on work complete and what is still needed. I also believe in the interim that residents would benefit from the establishment of a relief assistance program with more open eligibility for those struggling to pay these bills.
The city is also considering a Municipal Services Corporation for water, which they state will reduce rates. I plan to explore the model and ensure this will reduce rates as stated.
According to the 2021 census 20.4% of residents spend 30% or more of their income on housing. 37.3% of renters spend 30% or more of their income on housing.
Port Colborne has seen an increase in development proposals with only a few finished buildings. There has also been concern from residents on the size and capacity of proposed buildings going into neighbourhoods that may not be prepared for growth, such as road issues, a lack of sidewalks, and more.
I plan to encourage responsible development and housing within the scope of the proposed areas and also encourage a greater conversation between the city and developers on issues such as sidewalks and parking.
Residents are facing increasing costs of living, which are only further exacerbated by high water bills, rising taxes, and the cost of municipal services. I would address issues of affordability on multiple fronts:
I would like to ensure any necessary tax increases are predictable and affordable for residents, with the city looking for efficiencies to lessen any increases needed.
I would like municipal fees to be easier to understand, with clear explanations about where funds and budgets go.
I have past experience in grant writing at the provincial and federal level and I would work to find funding wherever we can.
