Plenary 1: Distinguished Professor Gaven Martin FRSNZ
“What needs to change in the NZ Mathematics Education System”
Distinguished Professor Gaven Martin chaired the Royal Society expert panel. This expert panel were asked to provide advice about the NZ Mathematics curriculum. However, the panel found that curriculum alone was not the issue and investigated a range of other aspects key to our learning area. The report the panel produced in September is linked below.
Abstract: An analysis of the NZ Mathematics Education system in our recent independent report to the Ministry of Education identified systemic failures and showed we all have work to do to ensure the best outcomes for our ākonga students and our nation. We will summarise some of the pertinent issues, major findings, the data gathered to support them and discuss their consequences. We will then focus on outlining the Panel’s view on what needs to change and how, so as to support a viable and positive way forward.
