Plenary 1:

Associate Professor Sergiy Klymchuk, AUT, Auckland

Making mistakes is a natural part of every human activity. Most of them are unintentional but some are made deliberately in order to mislead, misguide, and misinform like for example “fake news”. Regardless of the nature of a mistake, an ability to recognise it and act accordingly is a valuable competency and a key aspect of critical thinking skills

To enhance such skills I propose to use so-called provocative mathematics questions in teaching and assessment – questions that are deliberately designed to mislead the solver. The intention is to prepare students for real life better. Developing a state of mind to analyse a mathematics question in a classroom should enhance an ability to critically analyse other situations outside mathematics. This talk presents results of two studies on school mathematics teachers’ attitudes towards using provocative mathematics questions in teaching and assessment.
