My name is Alyssa Lloyd and I am currently finishing my 2nd year at the University of Victoria working toward completing my Bachelor of Education Degree. Throughout my teen years I had the oppertunity to become a junior ice hockey instructor for the middle school in my city, and ever since taking on that role I have been very eager to get into the classroom. Last year I did just that, and gained valuable knowledge I will continue to take forward with me. I have always had a passion for teaching, and these experiences have played an important role in shaping my teaching philosophy thus far. I cannot wait for practicum to begin, so I can gain more experience in the field!
I wholeheartedly believe in the philosophy that learning occurs at different rates and paces. This is imperative as an educator, because in the classroom one needs to be aware of each individual student and what they need in order to succeed. Even though my teaching philosophy will change throughout not only my degree, but over the course of my teaching career, I feel as though this is one philosophy that will stick with me. For the duration of my time at the University of Victoria, and with my practicum experience, I hope to gain all the necessary skills to reach my full potential as an elementary school teacher.
Within the new curriculum in British Columbia there is a huge push for inquiry based learning, and it has really motivated me to dive deeper into what that might look like. I believe that it is a way to empower students, as well as create active engagment and student ownership. When inquiry based learning is thriving, it in turn motivates students to succeed. There are many different possibilities for what student inquiry might look like, and I feel as though Trevor Mackenzie, and Rebbeca Bathurst-Hunt have done a fabulous job depicting just that! During my practicum I hope to gain some more knowledge on inquiry based learning.
