Our History

Back in the summer of '69...

Fortunate to be situated on one of Nova Scotia's best recreational lakes, Aylesford Lake Yacht Club has officially sailed her waters for over 50 years. The late 1930s saw the beginning of "cottage country" at Aylesford Lake and with it the arrival of small pleasure craft. Friendly competition evolved and the seeds of the modern day club were formed.

World War II soon interrupted and playthings were shelved to deal with the more serious matters at hand. This hiatus would slow the growth of the sport on the lake for some 20 years, although sails were occasionally spotted. The post-war boom brought many cottagers back to the lake and interest in sailing resurfaced.

The '60s saw an increase in popularity of the sport and in 1969, a group of weekend sailors made up of cottage families from around the lake joined together to form Aylesford Lake Yacht Club. As cottage development around the lake continued, the opportunity to acquire land presented itself and our donated club site was secured. During the mid-70's, these same families banded together and together, through fundraising and donations of both supplies and labour, constructed the clubhouse and developed the site that we still enjoy. Races, after parties, award nights and potluck suppers rotated from cottage to cottage, weekend to weekend, creating life-long friendships that endure to this day.
