Lehman College - Dr.B Nov 28,2022

In this video Br.B had mainly talked about how the world is, towards people of color. People who are diverse and the people who are the minority in today's society. He mentioned several times that he appears to the world, the way that God made him. And that many people don't like that, so they either stereotype individuals like him or they treat them differently. For example Dr.B was talking about his experience when he was flying from Chicago to El Paseo, TX when he was bumped up to business class, because he's a frequent flyer. There was a situation that happened when there was someone in business class that wasn't suppose to be there and the first person they had approached was Dr.B, only because he was the only colored person in business class. Instead 0f making a general announcement they had assumed that it was Dr.B that didn't belong there. He also talked about things such as cultural shift.

One thing that stood out for me, or what I had found interesting and really stuck with me was when Dr.B has stated "If you can't be good about being good, you wind up being good at being bad because all of us got to be good at something". Which in my opinion applies to everybody, everybody tries to be good at something. And if not they end up with the wrong crowd and end up living life on a different path. He had also stated that "Doing it the wrong way isn't good for the economy, Doing it the right way makes an impact on the economy". Which bascially means to do better and to always strive for better so that you can inspire more generations to do better.

"Read, Read, Read" - Dr. B Nov 28,2022

This video talked about how important reading is. Dr.B started off by saying "READ, READ, READ!". He talked about how reading more will increase your vocabulary, expand your horizons, and to read more so that you can begin to think critically. To read so that you can learn to reject, rejection and not yourself or eachother. To make yourself read atleast 25 pages or more of a book. Specifically to read memoirs, autobiographies, and biographies of people that have had it tougher than you. Making it a habit to read about people won't let you "make it a profession to feel sorry about yourself".

What stood our for me in this video? What stood out for me was when Dr.B had stated to read about people who had it tougher than you. Yes, reading any such as novels or biographies still gives you to ability to learn more. But he had specifically stated to read about people who had it tougher. Tougher meaning a tougher life growing up which gave them the knowledge and the ability to be where they are today. And to me, being able to read about other peoples' experiences gives me perspective. Not only that whenever I may be having a hard time, there is someone out there in the world who has gone through what I am going through. Which then means I am able to ovecome whatever obstacles I may face in life.

"How I overcame my fear of public speaking" By Danish Dhamani

Public speaking in general is difficult for any human being. It's a common phobia for many people. Most individuals despise standing in front of a crowd of people they don't know which tends to make them nervous which then leads to their public speaking skills not be so great. I watched a video titled "How I overcame my fear of public speaking" By Danish Dhamani, he talked about tips on overcoming public speaking fears and how he overcame his. His tips included

  • How he hired a speech coach

  • He practiced in a mirror

  • He took online courses, etc.

He also stated that the way you talk for example talking fast to get people excited. And that you should talk slow to get people's attention. I felt like this video wasn't useful. Due to his tips being things you would have to go out and acquire things. And not tips that would help you mentally.

Ms.Oliveros' Presentation Sept 19, 2022

Ms. Oliveros presented to my class one last time. She talked about the FAFSA and programs such as Dual Enrollment, CLYMER, and DCAPS that we have an opportunity to enroll in. Something new this year is that you can earn the college credits for GCC if you have a Certificate of Mastery, but now you can get them with just a Certificate of Completion or Certificate of Mastery. I also learned that I can get a copy of my official transcript at the counseling office and not from the main office.

I learned a few new things because most of the things she went over was repetitive from the years before. Something new I did learn was that you can only have a certificate of completion and still earn college credits. When from before you would need to obtain a certificate of mastery to get your college credits. It's always good to know about opportunities we can use to help our college or future education life be more easier.

Dr. Betances' Presentation Sept 13,2022

Dr.B spoke to me and my classmates about "how to be a transformational leader". He also talked about his life experiences as well as his life lessons. He talked about no matter where you come from or what your background is, everyone has the ability to be the best version of themselves. A transformational leader means that you would have to have emotional intelligence. But in order to be a successful leader, you would need to be transformed. Dr.B said "do not lead to make peace with others, until you've made peace with yourself."

I honestly learned so much from Dr. Betances. I learned that no matter how much tragedy or challenges you may go through in life, you can still make the best out of your experiences. Something that really stood out for me is when Dr. Betances said "People should not be punished for something they weren't taught." As well as when he said "if you don't make mistakes, you don't learn." Life is all about learning and progressing to be the best version of yourself. But one thing people shouldn't do is judge another individual when they have done something wrong, but instead be considerate and understanding about any situation.

Leadership in Times of Change - Jerry Roberts reaction

While reading this article I learned about leadership. I learned what skills you would need to have, to be not only a good leader but as well as a successful one. This article talked about going through tough times especially during times of need for example the Corona Virus pandemic we are all still facing today. This article talks about how being understanding is a key factor to being a great leader, for example Mr. Jerry Roberts used the Covid Pandemic and how that people are going through tough times. They may be angry as well because at first no one knew how to truly feel because everything was just closed off and he stated that a good leader need to know how to deal with peoples emotions and be considerate about their issues as well.

When reading this article I was surprised that being understanding is an important skill to have when trying to be a successful leader. Mr. Jerry Roberts made some good points and gave examples as well and it all made sense. I agree with what he talked about in this article, yes a leader can be confident but a great leader needs to be understanding. Because they need to hear the opinions of people and learn how to help them deal with their issues and or problems.
