ALVERSTOKE
'Old English'
BOWLS CLUB
(ESTABLISHED IN 1896)
Located in Gosport Park
It is believed that Old English Bowls was played by Sir Francis Drake at
Plymouth Sound before he set off to meet the Armada.
We are one of seven bowls clubs in the world still playing Old English Bowls.
All seven clubs are local, the furthest being at Bosham in West Sussex.
Our green is situated in Gosport Park, Park Road . Entrance is close to the Park Tavern and 50 metres to the let inside the gates .
In Old English we play with two woods which have additional weight
added to increase the bias and we play into a marked box rather than
the EBA straight line.
The green is not as flat as EBA games which makes it more interesting.
We play in normal casual dress, and our only requirement is that you wear flat shoes just to protect the green.
You can play as little or as often as you like as teams are selected from
those attending on the day.
We play on:-
Monday and Friday evenings at 6pm (5.45pm for registration) and
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons at 2pm. ( 1.45pm if poss.) .
No need for any previous experience, and beginners are especially welcome. Why not come along and see for yourself at any time when the gates are open. Tuition and bowls can be provided ,(in fact) If you come 30 minutes before the times shown ,we could include you in a game .
