What is K12?

K12 is an online curriculum provider that serves the K-12 education market in the US and internationally. The Virginia-based company offers a robust curriculum that includes an online learning management system, along with core and elective courses produced by education experts based on rigorous research.

K12 maintains three main customer bases: online public schools, online private schools, and individual users. Its award winning curriculum has been adopted by online public schools in many states across the US.

K12 also offers enrollment assistance and training for schools that choose their curriculum, including ALVA.

What is a Learning Coach?

A learning coach is usually a parent or guardian who is in charge of the child's education wellbeing. Learning Coaches of virtual students assume a major role in monitoring their children's education progress from their home.

Learning Coaches have the following responsibilities: communicating with teachers and administrations, monitoring their students' learning progress, counseling and tutoring their students, designing and implementing individual learning strategies for their children, among many others.

Learning Coaches with younger children can expect to spend 3 to 6 hours per day engaging with their children. The time is gradually reduced as students become more indepedent in their learning. Children with special needs or are in need of remedial work require more time.

What is an advisor?

ALVA has designated advisors who will work with individual families from different areas of the state. Your advisor will call you on the phone, meet with you and your students to discuss academic matters throughout the school year.

Learning coach advisors will work closely with school advisors to assist families in various areas.

Why do I need to log attendance?

As part of the Eufaula City School system, ALVA is subject to education mandates governing all public schools in Alabama, including minimum attendance and mandatory state testing.

Each student must have at least 6 hours of attendance logged each school day, for a total of 180 days in the 2019-2020 school year.

What is ClassConnect?

ClassConnect sessions are synchronous meetings hosted by teachers to facilitate learning. Depending on individual needs, students are required to attend minimum sessions each week with each subject teacher. The number of sessions are usually determined by student's benchmark testing results.

All sessions are recorded and can be viewed later if needed. However, students must attend each required session except for under extenuating circumstances.

Microphones are required to attend sessions. Earphone are optional.

Benchmark Testing

Benchmark testings are informal testings conducted in the beginning of each quarter. Students take benchmark tests on their computers from home. They do not need to travel to a separate location.

Parents may not help their students in the benchmark tests.

Students will need a webcam and microphone in order to take the tests.

State Testing

As mandated by the state, all public students in grades 3-8 are required to attend proctored testings in Language Arts, Math and Science (grades 5 and 7) each spring.

You will receive details about the tests beforehand and the locations are determined by your residence.

Stride

Students in grades K-8 have opportunities to practice their knowledge in a learning program called Stride. It is designed to improve testing performance by engaging students in fun, game-based activities. Students are usually required to spend a minimum set of hours appropriate for their grade level.
