In the twenty or so minutes I spent talking up to Medeni it was abundantly clear that her songwriting is deeply inspired by life’s experiences - whether childhood memories, toxic relationships or whatever she is feeling at the time she puts pen to paper.
Medeni is a Welsh-born singer-songwriter. And a patient one at that. I accidentally missed the first interview time slot, and she agreed to reconvene. It should be the pop star keeping the interviewee waiting! But it is evidence of her warm personality that she instantly forgave me!
In anticipation of her new EP, we discussed the thinking behind this collection of songs that she described as her most authentic work to date.
First single "Overwhelmed" tackles the pressures many young women face - expectations around relationships, careers, home ownership and starting a family become an exhausting checklist imposed by society. Rather than embracing that traditional path, Medeni jokes that she'd sometimes rather run away to Thailand and leave the expectations behind. "It's about feeling very overwhelmed in life as a young woman," she explained.
The single received strong support, including from BBC Introducing Wales, earning playlist spots and radio play across the UK and internationally. For Medeni, however, the greatest achievement isn't measured in streams or statistics. "I made a promise to myself," she said. "My goal is not the numbers. It's for the listener to feel something." That philosophy runs through everything she creates.
"Everything I write is a true story," she admitted. Each song is a diary entry, chronicling real experiences, real relationships and real emotions. It is a commitment to honesty that has shaped her creative identity. The result is a growing catalogue of songs rooted in vulnerability. Rather than chasing trends or algorithms, she focuses on creating music that sparks a reaction, whether that's joy, comfort, heartbreak or tears. For Medeni, connection matters more than perfection. "If somebody feels something," she said, "then that's key.”
