There’s something quite brat about what Alfreda’s doing.
Coming onto stage with a different costume each night, she carries the flair and decorum of Chappell Roan or Lady Gaga. With her evident cinematic inspirations, she channels the vision of Charli XCX.
As for the Brat Girl Summer part, Alfreda debuted festival season in the middle of a heatwave, with The Great Escape and Dot to Dot Festival.
“I didn’t quite factor in how far Bristol and Nottingham were from each other so it was quite heavy,” she says.
“I definitely lacked some energy and I’m gonna need to get a bit more fit if I’m going to continue taking this act to festival level!”
Her first EP, Mother’s Makeup, dropped back in 2024, and drew inspiration from old Hollywood musicals like Singing’ in the Rain and into the camp B-Movies of John Waters”.
As for the fashion, her vision for the stage act is clear, not that it ever takes away from the rich, decorative records. Alfreda offered some advice for those wanting to blend Music, Fashion and Film.
“Don’t take everything from Pinterest,” she says. “Try out new things. Go to the V&A and look at the history of fashion, or some old movies. It’s all about the silhouette - someone once told me that, and that’s a really good bit of advice I took on”.
As for her favourite look: “It has to be something really big and editorial, like latex. Although it’s really uncomfortable I know I look great!”
May saw the release of Alfreda’s latest record, Patsy, a collaboration with The XX’s Oliver Sim.
“We met out and about and he also has an interest in music and fashion, so he came to me with Patsy, which he’d written for me. Nobody’s ever written a song for me, and Oliver can perfectly articulate who I am behind everything I do. He got it spot on, which was pretty f***ing cool”.
“Putting my stamp on a song someone else has written isn’t something I’ve wanted to embrace in the past but because it’s a friend who knows me I can do it. Usually I’m obsessed with lyrics and edits but I need to believe what I’m saying”.
Patsy marks the next chapter in Alfreda’s thrilling journey, which launched back in 2024 with Guest Room, the song of hers which still means the most to her.
“It’s the first song I wrote with my writing partner. Pink Elephants is a great way-in. And Frankie is the most streams I’ve got on Spotify which is weird because it’s a six minute song”.
She also has a soft spot for Lipstick, her very first release, with an incredibly technicolour influenced music video, but this is a song that she so rarely gets asked about.
Now is time to think about the future, and a very exciting year ahead for Alfreda: “I’m calling it a mixtape rather than an album. I’m not gonna give it the weight of an album just yet. I’m working on a web show at the moment following my pursuit of music and the world, and more gigs, and hopefully joining a really great artist on tour - so watch this space”.
