Rome

Rome is the name given to various countries: the Ancient Roman Kingdom, Republic and Empire (original Rome), the Byzantine Republic (as it is historically known as East Rome), the Papal States (as the original Ancient Roman Empire, then the Western Roman Empire, collapsed into the Papal States), the Kingdom of Italy (erroneously), the Holy Roman Empire (also erroneously), and the Italian Legion which formed into the Second Roman Empire. History

Not much information is known as of yet about Ancient Rome's history in AltWorld. It is known that Rome was the dominant force in Europe, controlling the entire Mediterranean. At some point, it split into West Rome and East Rome. East Rome later became the Byzantine Empire, and then the Byzantine Republic of today. West Rome, however, collapsed not long after this split, shrinking all the way to just the city of Rome, in which it was incorporated into the Papal States, a country created from the Roman Empire led by the Catholic Pope.

The name "Rome" would not see the light of day again to describe a country until the Italian Legion in 1812, who claimed to be the Second Roman Empire. After a successful conquest of much of the Mediterranean during the Great War, they officially named themselves the Roman Empire in 1820. This empire would shrink, however, down to core Italian territory in 1843 after an unsuccessful conquest of Spain.

Rome created an alliance in 1822 called the Legion, comprised primarily of countries from the Central forces. It left the Legion after the War of Roman Aggression, which led Germany to become its leader and rename it to the European Council.
