For over 40 years, Althea Long has been a commanding voice in broadcasting, a multi-award-winning radio and TV host and producer known for her direct, hands-on approach. From diverse radio formats to a myriad of music genres, she has been a fixture on Arizona’s airwaves, even earning the esteemed titles of “The First Lady of Disco Radio” and “The First Lady of Jazz Radio.”
This “Phoenix Legend” didn’t just play the music, she engaged with its creators. Her impressive roster of interviewees includes jazz legends like Les McCann, Betty Carter, Branford Marsalis, and Jack McDuff. Althea also extended her influence as a concert promoter, enriching the Phoenix Metro Area by bringing in headliners such as Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, Freddie Hubbard, Spyro Gyra, Tito Puente and Houston Person.
Althea’s journey into jazz began during her college years. As she recalls, “During late night study sessions, I would catch an East Coast jazz radio show – ‘The Best of All Possible Worlds,’ hosted by Harry Abraham. I got turned on to this music and became a big fan…FOREVER!” Today, celebrated for her “Smooth Talker” delivery, Althea is in her element creating “A Music Mind Walk.” This unique radio show is an eclectic blend of her favorite tunes from her private collection, thoughtfully curated for a sophisticated listener.
“I love The American Songbook; I get excited listening to Latin and African rhythms; I get taken back in time with R&B memories. I love it ALL!” Althea exclaims—and that boundless passion is precisely what defines “The Althea Long Show.”
