In its continuous thrust to develop and provide opportunities to showcase legal developments and to expose students in different areas of law, the ALSP spearheaded the following flagship projects and activities this A.Y. 2019-2020:
Rule of Law Congress.
The Asia Foundation (TAF), in partnership with ALSP and PALS, conducted the “Rule of Law: 2nd National Congress for Law Students” with a focus on Mindanao in three legs: Davao-SOCCSKSARGEN (August 17-18, 2019), Zamboanga (August 24-25), and Northern Mindanao-Caraga-BARMM (August 31-September 1).
ALSP Koko Bar and National Bar Operations.
In partnership with Senator Koko Pimentel, ALSP served and assisted with the four (4) weeks of Koko Bar Review. Also ALSP in its BarOps site provided logistical support and served as the center of exchange of bar materials among various law schools for the November 2019 bar examinations.
ALSP Legal Camp 2020.
Held last January 2 to 8, 2020, the ASEAN educational trip provided 70 deserving student leaders with legal training and related learning activities that promote understanding on relevant principles in international legal practice. By establishing partnership with ALSA National Chapter Vietnam and ALSA Local Chapter Hanoi, the delegates were able to visit and attend lectures and workshops in top universities, law firms and other partner institutions in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Conflicts of Law 2020.
Conflicts of Law is an annual sports competition among the different law schools around the National Capital Region (Metro Manila). The participants, representing their respective schools, compete in various events, such as basketball, volleyball and football to name a few.
LuzOne Conference.
ALSP’s Luzon As One (LuzOne) Regional Convention is the first and biggest gathering of law students from Luzon (NCR, North Luzon and South Luzon) that was held last March 7 to 9 at Albay.
Court Appointments Watch.
The Court Appointments Watch is a national, multi–sectoral network of members of the academe, youth, civil society organizations, the private sector, and the media that aims for a transparent and inclusive judicial appointments process that engages all citizens, and assures the selection of members of the judiciary of proven competence, integrity, probity, and independence through measurable standards monitored by a nationwide, independent, and credible network.
Topping the Bar Webinar with Atty. Mae Diane Azores.
Last June 1, 2020, Rex Bookstore, one of ALSA Philippines’ corporate partners conducted a webinar on the topic: “Preparing for the Bar Amidst the Pandemic”. Preparation for the Bar requires hard work, more so during a health crisis, so REX together with the 2019 Bar Topnotcher Atty. Mae Diane Azores and the ten selected officers of ALSA Philippines who acted as panelists shared tips and suggestions via a live discussion on preparing for the Bar.
Donation Drives (Mindanao Earthquake and COVID-19 Pandemic).
ALSP through its Mindanao Regional Board conducted a relief campaign for the affected families of the Mindanao Earthquake and the ongoing pandemic.
Climate Justice Webinar Series.
In partnership with Greenpeace Philippines, this three-part webinar series invited and gathered defenders, stewards, experts, stakeholders, and advocates for the environment, with the end goal of establishing a common and unified understanding of the climate crisis and the actions we can do to manage it and avoid what could be the worst tragedy ever created by humankind.
ALSA Forum Jakarta 2020
Done online due to the pandemic, delegates coming from the different law schools in the Philippines attended the ALSA Forum Jakarta 2020. Exchanges, learning sessions on laws and legal updates, and interactions amongst the ALSA community were the highlights of the event.
Mental Health Webinar.
In partnership with the Legal Education Board, this mental health webinar was conducted towards helping the law students to cope up with the new normal and help address concerns confronting their mental health.
The Pros and Cons on the Anti-terrorism Law.
This online webinar was conducted to educate the public about the pros and cons of the Anti-terrorism Law by guesting lawyers in the government, academic, private, and public sector who gave their input and shared their legal knowledge about the said law.
ALSP Online Student Consultation.
In partnership with the Philippine Association of Law Schools and the Legal Education Board, an online consultation was conducted to hear the concerns of our law students and brief them through our speakers about the new set up of online learning.
ALSP Law School Buddies.
This online event became an avenue for the different law students across the country to mingle and listen to tips from senior law students on their best practices when it comes to learning and conquering law school.
ACTIVOTE 2020.
In partnership with the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges - Student Network (APMC-SN), a voter’s education and leadership campaign webinar was conducted to help educate and inform the youth about their right to vote and how they can choose leaders who will truly serve this nation.
ALSP and MyLegalWhiz Online Legal Aid Clinic.
In partnership with MyLegalWhiz, a monthly live talk session that will run for four (4) episodes was conducted in order to provide free legal advice to legal issues and questions that were asked by the public to ALSP. This also became an avenue to address some student concerns in line with their online learning.
National Legal Aid Project.
ALSP is in the process of finishing our modules for the launch of our Legal Literacy Project in Butuan City and other pilot cities. This will serve as a template for other legal aid projects that will be conducted in the different regions in the next few months to come.
Music and Arts Night for Justice
This became an avenue for our law students to advance the rule of law through the Arts and Music. Participated by different artists in the legal field and law students, the aims of Justice was truly highlighted and achieved during that night.
31st National Convention (October 31 to November 1)
The National Convention is the most anticipated event for all the law students all over the Philippines. We had more than 500 participants who attended the 31st National Convention and they participated in the sessions, workshops, and the law student mixer. We were graced by legal luminaries and it was a wonderful opportunity to learn from them.
The Switch: Suits up and Scrubs in! (November)
In collaboration with the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges - Student Network, students coming from the medical and legal field had the opportunity to experience how it is to be a med or law student. We had both law and medical professors and professionals who shared their experiences and knowledge to our attendees.
