Alpha Astrum is a student-led non-profit organization at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus that designs, builds and launches experimental high-powered rockets. Our ultimate goal is to be the first Latin American team to launch the first-ever student-built rocket to space, as well develop the first liquid rocket engine in Puerto Rico. Simultaneously, we raise awareness of the rapid growing aerospace industry in Puerto Rico and inspire the next-generation of young rocketeers.
Alpha Astrum was founded to provide UPRM students with valuable hands-on experience on the field of rocketry and aerospace, as well as, to expand the aerospace industry and develop sustainable spaceflight capabilities in Puerto Rico.
To develop students professionally through the collaborative efforts of designing, building and launching experimental high-powered rockets, and to raise awareness of the rapid growing aerospace industry in Puerto Rico.
Prepare the next generation of Puerto Rican rocket scientists and aerospace engineers to enter and excel in the rapid growing aerospace industry. Develop great leaders within the STEM and aerospace industry. Enable and develop a sustainable space program at the university, where many projects related to aerospace engineering can be developed by students and faculty. Inspire and excite PR's youth about space, with the purpose of motivating them to eventually pursue STEM careers. Become pioneers in rocket technology in Puerto Rico. Compete in various student challenges relating to space and rocketry.
The Dynamic Rocket for Airborne-Controlled Operations (D.R.A.C.O.) team design, build, test and fly a high powered rocket with a payload experiment onboard, as part of the NASA University Student Launch Initiative competition. Every year the team faces new challenges as the goals and experiment vary year by year according to NASA’s goals. Already, the team has obtained various medals and this year they will be travelling to Hunstville, Alabama to compete for the 3rd time.
The Loxodon-1 project aims to design, manufacture, and test the first liquid rocket engine in Puerto Rico. Sponsored by the NASA Puerto Rico Space Grant Consortium, the team is currently working towards finishing the CDR 2.0 and begin the manufacturing phase this semester.
The STEM Engagement team works to educate Puerto Rican youth about science and rocketry principles, thus encouraging future STEM careers. They also provide workshops for UPRM students to develop technical & non-technical skills. Their ultimate goal is to impact and grow the aerospace industry in Puerto Rico.
