Tau Chapter Scholarship Information

The information below is specifically about the local ASL- Tau Chapter Scholarship. There are also national scholarships that members can apply for- information on those are emailed by both the national home office and by the Chapter Councilor early in the spring semester. Both scholarships are competitive.

The Tau Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society offers a scholarship for select UMGC students.   The Alpha Sigma Lambda Tau Chapter Scholarship is awarded once a year, and the number of recipients is dependent on the funds available. The scholarship is competitive, not every student who is eligible can receive it.  Recipients are chosen during the summer and the funds are awarded in the sequential school year, beginning in the fall. The scholarship is applied directly to a student’s account, and is meant to be used towards tuition and fees. This chapter scholarship can be applied to either undergraduate and graduate level work.

Members are encouraged to apply if they meet the following requirements.  

Eligibility: 

Eligible students can apply for the scholarship.  To be eligible, a student should:

• Be a UMGC student (any location)

• Be a member of the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society, Tau Chapter

• Have a cumulative UMGC GPA of a 3.0 or higher

• For undergraduate students: Have completed 15 or more undergraduate credits at UMGC

• For graduate students: Have completed 9 or more graduate level credits at UMGC

• Be in good standing with the Financial Aid Office (students should complete a FAFSA form and the subsequent UMGC scholarship form)

Application Instructions

• Interested students should complete the FAFSA.  Once you complete the FAFSA, Financial Aid should send you the scholarship form which you should then submit before June 15. This form is reviewed for all of UMGC's scholarships, including the Tau Chapter Scholarship.

• When completing the scholarship application information, please make sure you check off that you are a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda and include a thorough essay that discusses your scholarship and leadership (see below).

Review Process

Applications are reviewed by the Alpha Sigma Lambda Tau Chapter Scholarship Committee in the summer. Applications are scored by strength of essay- for the essay, committee members will be looking for a discussion on scholarship and leadership. Financial need, GPA, and credits completed may also be considered in the review process.

Information for students who qualify for other UMGC scholarships

The scholarship is considered a University endowed foundation scholarship.  Students who are being awarded other scholarships may not be eligible to be given the Tau Chapter scholarship in addition to their other scholarships due to Financial Aid guidelines.
