Alok Ranjan is currently working with Bosch India as a Research Architect. Before joining Bosch, he was a researcher with Hitachi Research, India. Prior to his joinig, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and worked under the mentorship of Prof. Yanxiao Zhao.

His research interests are focused on Internet-of-Things (IoT), Mobile Sensing, Industrial IoT, Machine learning, Wireless sensor networks (WSNs), and UAVs based emergency communication with a focus on system research. In particular, he works on the design, implementation, and deployment of IoT applications ranging from high-stress work environments (such as complex industrial environments) to normal terrestrial environment and smart city contexts. He has over nine years of research experience in middle-ware for the WSNs, deployment/characterization of low-power communication networks, mathematical modeling and their validations with real time data, wearable sensors and IoT based predictive modeling. He is also specialized in cyber physical systems with a focus on sensing at edge devices using machine learning algorithms. Lately, Alok is working on applied data and decision sciences in the domain of smart mobility/Electric vehicle ecosystem.

Alok's Ph.D. dissertation focused on low-power wireless communication for improvement of safety in industrial environment, in which he developed new channel model for radio propagation in confined mine settings and designed a novel emergency communication framework using UAVs. Besides, he has also deployed testbeds in different operational underground mines to understand the signal behavior at different depths having varying tunnel geometry.

Alok has received several awards for his work during Ph.D., out of which few significant mentions are "Best Graduate Forum Presenter Award 2017" at COMSNETS, "EuCAP Young Author Travel Award 2017", "LRN Foundation Award 2017", "Best Research Scholar of the Department 2016" and "Best Poster Paper Award-Honorable mention 2016" at COMSNETS. He has been also feliciated for his volunteering services among with "Outstanding Service Recognition-COMSNETS Association 2021.

He completed his Ph.D. from National Institute of Technology Rourkela in 2018 and was supervised by Prof. H. B. Sahu (NIT, Rourkela) and Dr. Prasant Misra (TCS Research & Innovation, Bangalore). Prior to joining his Ph.D., he earned his Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) in Computer Science & Engineering in the year of 2012 from Rajiv Gandhi Prodyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal (MP), India.

He is a Senior member of IEEE and a member of ACM SigMobile and ACM.
