Rosa May Anna Sumwalt (1842-1868) was born in Baltimore, the third daughter of Alexander and Catherine (Foss) Sumwalt. She died on 12 February 1868 due to consumption (tuberculosis). Service was at St. John the Baptist Church, Barre Street (now the left field at the Orioles, Camden Yards Stadium). Rosa may have been a patient of Dr. Manning's or she may have been the daughter of a friend.

AN OBITUARY ON THE DEATH OF MISS ROSA M. SUMWALT.
See! what is that so pure and fair Upon that bier of death,
With long, disheveled flowing hair, That breathes no human breath?
'Tis one beloved—a sainted girl, Who did not fear to die,
But longed to see that brighter world Beyond the deep blue sky.
An angel's form was near her when She was about to die,
Sent by the living God of men— The Christ that rules on high.
And though the darkness gathered round, Miss Rosa trembled not:
For through her living faith profound She saw a happier lot.
Where no consumption's withering blight Could crush the blooming flower,
Nor pain, nor anguish, woe, nor night, Could cloud her glorious dower.
