The aim of this workshop is to provide an introductory level exposure to the use of CASA Pipeline in processing the ALMA data.
The aim of this workshop is to provide an introductory level exposure to the use of CASA Pipeline in processing the ALMA data.
The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is an astronomical interferometer. 66 antennas, a combination of 12m and 7m diameter dishes, are linked together to act as one giant radio telescope. ALMA was constructed at an elevation of 5,000 m on the Chajnantor plateau, in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The area was chosen mainly due to its low humidity.
The Common Astronomy Software Application (CASA) is the primary data processing software for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and is frequently used also for other radio telescopes. CASA is free to download and use.
i). Installation of Unix-Language Operating System (Ubuntu).
ii). Installation of CASA 5.6 software.
iii). A stable internet connection since the workshop will be conducted fully online using Zoom.

The science targets used in this workshop are G221.9605-01.9926 and 520412, two objects classified as Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). YSOs are pre-main sequence stars that have not started fusing hydrogen in their cores. YSOs are important in investigating and understanding star-formation mechanisms. The two main mechanisms are monolithic collapse of turbulent cores (McKee & Tan 2003) and competitive accretion (Bonnell & Bate 2006). In general, a better understanding of star-formation process may also assist efforts by scientists in finding potential habitable worlds (Sakai et al 2017, Tinetti et al 2013 & Küffmeier at al 2017).
