I think this bathroom had not been updated since the 1970's, when the unit was built. The sink faucet was corroded through. Definitely original tiling (done right against the cement). And the toilet used a lot of water (probably 7 gallons a flush, as opposed to 1.28 with the new one). Note the blue kitty-proof toilet paper holder. I found out at their annual that they are now considered senior cats. You think they'd leave TP alone at their age, but no.
cThe left wall has tile right on the cement wall, so it will stay underneath and just be covered over.
You can see on the left a tray placed under the pipe with the slow leak until they repair it (I recently realized I had a leak somewhere in that wall, but a slow one and since I was getting ready to do this, I decided just to wait).
The old medicine cabinet was recessed and identical to the one in the guest bathroom and they were located in the same place back to back. I had the (mistaken) idea that they might be one Janus unit, so hadn't planned on replacing it. Turns out they were not (more room between the two than I realized). So as the contractor said, since I am replacing everything else... The new one won't be recessed, hence the new dry wall here.
New drywall in all around the bathroom
In the shower, the old shower pan is gone and tile will be going in. You can see the new shower control is in.
The bathroom is coming along. The color of the front of the vanity is not the actual color -- there is a translucent protective blue film still on it (peeling on the right side). You can see the actual green on the inside left of the vanity. And then a brown medicine cabinet above. There are some compromises to be made. The vanity is a single floating drawer (which I found difficult to find -- many were double drawers which came closer to the floor). You can see the space beneath it on the right. I wanted this to allow me to put the cat litter underneath it. When I put my old litter inside a regular vanity (with one door off, see above), sometimes one cat would trap the other in there. If the litter started feeling unsafe, there was the risk that they'd stop using it. With the openness, cats should be able to easily escape should a sister decide to attack.
But as this was the only one I found to give me this clearance, it is a little wide for the space. The space for the toilet works, but will be a little narrower than normally recommended. The medicine cabinet is also a little lower than usual (but works for me) to leave space for the new light fixture above (not yet installed).
Below is the sink ready to install and left is a photo of the tile flooring next to the sink/vanity for color comparison.
Sink now on vanity and faucet added
And prepping the shower for tile.
Here are some photos of when they put the new tile on the righthand wall of the shower stall. It looked a lot more gray in the light out of the bathroom than it had in the store, in the box, etc.For comparison, on the right is a piece of the shower wall tile not in place. Even under flashlight, it looked dark grey when in place. Mike, the contractor, didn't like how they put the tile in so was having it pulled out to be replaced (at his expense -- love his attention to detail and getting it right) and I decided to change up the tile. It is too small a space for the darkness the original tile was bringing.
Here is that original tile up but not grouted and the floor starting to go in. Below leveling out the ground under the vanity, where there hadn't prviously been tiles.
Here's the second tile in but not yet grouted (floor also not yet grouted). Basic white but it will be accented by the bone-colored grout (see color below; also in the floor and kitchen backsplash)
And here's the step/ledge for the shower close up. Mike (the contractor) picked a piece of marble to go with th original tile (as it looked outside of the bathroom), but fortunately it also looks good with the white tile I ended up with as my second choice. I like the large size (less grouting to keep clean).
Walls are primed but not painted (going with a cream color). You can see a trace of the original purple/lavender at the bottom near the floor, but base board will cover that. Film still over the front of the vaniety, throwing off the color a little.
And below with grout... (floor and shower wall)
The plastic protection is still on the front of the vanity, so the color is still slightly off what it will be. That's the wall color, but it needs a second coat in places.
Left: new place for the cat litter!
Right: the grab bar also serves as a shelf
