Roan is a gene that adds white hairs to a horses coat. This can go all the way to the edges of the ears and just above the knees or it can stay near the belly. Any base coat can have roan, the ones pictured are simply undiluted versions.
Horses with this gene can also have cornspots, currently there is no limit to how many spots a horse can have.
