What is Occupational Therapy?

Everyone has occupations. Occupation refers to activities that support the health, well-being, and development of an individual (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2014). For a child, occupations include playing functionally, learning, interacting with family and friends, learning to complete self-care tasks (dressing, grooming, feeding themselves, etc.), and other daily activities. Occupational therapy practitioners help children develop necessary skills to increase independence and participation in everyday activities in their home, school, and community. Occupational therapists develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on each child’s physical, cognitive, and/or developmental impairments, environment, and goals most important to the family.
