During June of 2024 I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the University of Arkansas’ Study Abroad Program in Rome. Over the five weeks, I was a student of International Relations and Global Studies. A subject matter whose depth, and intricate nature consumed all of my focus, and refined my skills in; critical thinking, conflict resolution, interpersonal communications, and adaptability. In the final days of my time there I saw how the study abroad experience helped me bridge the geographic isolation of the United States through intellectual inquiry.
I found my courses there to be pleasantly balanced between being culturally immersive, and intellectually dense. We took class to the streets, where I was able to further develop my interpersonal abilities alongside my proficiency in Italian. We took class to the World Press Photo Exhibition, and to the United Nations headquarters (FAO) where I was able to develop an enhanced understanding of global issues. Lastly, we kept class in the classroom and analyzed works of literature like “The Arrogance of Power” by J. William Fullbright… we held debates centered around potential reform, and together we created an environment to refine and perfect our critical thinking abilities.
I will forever feel grateful for having had the ability and privilege of being a student here in Rome, and I cannot wait to find opportunities back home where I can integrate my experience and improve my skill set.
