➜ God so loved the world...

"The world" means people -- God saw people who had turned away from Him, yet He loved us anyway and made a way to bring us back to Himself.

• Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

➜ that He gave His only Son...

Sin has a price we could never pay ourselves -- but because God loved us, He sent Jesus to take our place so we could be forgiven and restored to Him.

• Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

➜ that whoever believes in Him...

"Whoever" means you -- and "believing" is more than knowing about Jesus. It means trusting Him as Lord and relying on what He has done for us.

• Romans 10:9 - “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

➜ would not perish...

To perish is to be cut off from God, now and forever -- Jesus didn't come to make bad people good; He came to make people who are spiritually dead — cut off from God while still breathing — alive in Him. 

Apart from Him we are already condemned, and that condition doesn't end at death. Left unchanged, it continues into everlasting separation from God, in the place Scripture calls the lake of fire. This isn't a small decision. Whoever trusts in Him is rescued from that fate, now and forever.

• John 3:18 — “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

• Revelation 20:14-15 — "Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire."

➜ but have eternal life...

It's a gift, not something you earn -- Eternal life begins with knowing God now and continues forever. It is received by grace through faith, not by our works.

• Ephesians 2:8–9  - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith,and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.
