Alliance 4 Educational Opportunities (A4EO) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering rural schools in developing countries by providing access to quality education, essential resources, and fostering community engagement. We envision a world where every child, no matter their location, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed—unlocking their potential to transform their communities and create a brighter, sustainable future.
How Alliance 4 Educational Opportunities Got Started
Alliance 4 Educational Opportunities (A4EO) began as an inspired conversation between Juan D. Castillo and Shannon B. Castillo, a husband-and-wife team with nearly 50 years of combined educational experience. Both Juan and Shannon have served as classroom teachers, assistant principals, school principals, and district leaders in urban and rural school districts across Florida and North Carolina.
During a Christmas trip to Juan's native Colombia in December 2023, the couple drove past Fermin Emilio Montoya, a small school located not far from their family home. They couldn’t help but wonder about the number of students and teachers at the school and what resources were available to help the students and teachers thrive.
This simple observation sparked action. Their daughters reminded them of the extra school supplies they had at home, prompting a family-wide effort to gather materials. Shannon’s mother, Paula, joined in the search for supplies, and Juan enlisted the help of his parents, Ligia and Orlando, who still spend part of their time in Colombia. Ligia visited the school and spoke with one of the teachers, who confirmed the urgent need for additional support. From that moment, the idea for Alliance 4 Educational Opportunities (A4EO) was born.
By January 2024, this grassroots effort had evolved into a community-driven mission. With contributions from Juan’s brother Diego and his wife Carolina, Ligia’s friends and neighbors in Colombia, extended family, and even Juan’s students back in the United States, Alliance 4 Educational Opportunities officially began making a difference.
What started as a conversation during a family trip has grown into a heartfelt mission to empower rural schools in developing countries, beginning with the small yet impactful work at Fermin Emilio Montoya.
Building on the success of supporting Fermin Emilio Montoya, A4EO is committed to expanding its mission to reach other rural schools in Colombia. By identifying schools in similar need, A4EO aims to provide essential resources, including school supplies, teaching materials, and support for infrastructure improvements. The organization also seeks to foster partnerships with local communities, empowering educators and families to create sustainable, long-term solutions. With a focus on equity and opportunity, A4EO strives to ensure that more children in rural Colombia have access to the tools and support they need to unlock their full potential and build brighter futures.
