Taking precautions and sending your flute to an instrument repair tech annually will save you frustration and money. Flutes that don't have properly sealing pads will not play easily or at all. Below are some helpful hints for keeping your instrument in good shape.
While assembling your instrument, remember to be careful of the rods. These are easy to bend.
When not playing your instrument, make sure it is safe. You can put it on a flute stand or put it back in its case. Never place your flute on a music stand.
Never eat food or drink anything (other than water) while playing the flute. Your pads will last longer that way.
Brush your teeth if eating immediately before playing. Your pads will last longer.
After playing, run a flute swab through the body and foot joints of the flute. This will remove moisture and keep your pads in good shape.
Final reminder: take your flute into the shop every year or more. Most repair technicians will do free inspections. After awhile, even normal playing will take a toll on your instrument.
