I’m a credentialed Special Education teacher and an Autism Fitness Certified Pro specializing in strength training and intentional movement coaching — a structured approach that helps individuals develop the ability to plan, organize, and execute movement with greater independence and confidence in a social setting.
Although I train typical clients as well, my focus goes beyond traditional fitness since many of the athletes I support experience challenges with motor planning, coordination, sequencing, and body awareness — skills that are essential for both daily life and meaningful participation in social and community settings.
I design coaching sessions that directly support:
Motor Planning (Praxis) — supporting athletes in exploring and carrying out movement with greater confidence and intention
Sequencing & Multi-Step Actions — helping break movements into manageable steps and building them into more fluid patterns over time
Body Awareness & Spatial Control — developing awareness of body position, balance, and movement in space
Timing, Rhythm & Coordination — encouraging smoother, more connected movement experiences
Movement for Regulation & Engagement — using physical activity to support focus, participation, emotional regulation, and overall well-being
Reflex Integration-Informed Activities — incorporating movement activities designed to support coordination, balance, and foundational movement skills
Creative Play-Based Activities — encouraging active play, creativity, exploration, and reduced screen dependence
Social Connection & Communication Skills — creating opportunities for interaction, teamwork, confidence-building, and meaningful social engagement
My coaching is rooted in the belief that we should always presume competence. I use multimodal and text-based communication strategies when appropriate and prioritize respectful, individualized communication that supports each athlete’s unique strengths and learning style. No two athletes are alike, and every coaching experience is adapted to support confidence, participation, and meaningful growth.

What People Are Saying....
Derek gets Bridget moving! He brings his own athleticism and an organized, but varied workout routine each day. Bridget is up and ready for him at 7:00am and has invited him to meet her friends at soccer, so they connected immediately. She can be silly and try to lengthen the breaks between reps, but Derek is on it with a smile and his own gentle determination to get this young woman in shape. He is reliable and a clear communicator with our FMS and me as well.
We just started sessions with Derek for my autistic nonverbal eight-year-old son. It’s so gratifying to see my son interact and actually act like a little kid! He just needed someone to patiently draw out the little kid who likes to kick and run and throw. Derek‘s experience with special-needs children shows in every move he makes, he knows when to push and went to step back. I’m very enthusiastic about his approach and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Staying active is not Diego's favorite activity. But Derek keeps him consistently on the go multiple times a week with varied activities--bike rides, walks, runs, sprints, weights, and much more! Derek has a unique and essential background of special education and professional fitness experience. Diego and his family feel so fortunate to have Derek as part of our wonderful community to keep Diego happy, socialized and healthy!
