CHESS RULES
Eligibility:
Open to students of all ages.
Participants must register individually.
Time Limit:
Each participant will have 20 minutes (maximum) to beat the opponent.
A warning bell will be rung at 18 minutes, and participants must conclude by the 20-minute mark.
No move will be allowed after the 20-minute time limit.
Chess set will be provided by organizers.
Objective:
Goal: Checkmate your opponent’s king. This happens when the king is in a position to be captured (“in check”) and cannot escape.
The Board:
The chessboard has 64 squares (8 rows and 8 columns), alternating between light and dark colors.
Each player starts with 16 pieces: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, and 8 pawns.
How the Pieces Move:
King: Moves one square in any direction (up, down, sideways, or diagonally). The king cannot move into "check" (where it would be captured).
Queen: Moves any number of squares in any direction (up, down, sideways, or diagonally).
Rook: Moves any number of squares in a straight line, either up, down, or sideways.
Bishop: Moves any number of squares diagonally.
Knight: Moves in an “L” shape: two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicular (or vice versa). Knights are the only pieces that can jump over other pieces.
Pawn: Moves forward one square. On its first move, a pawn can move two squares forward. Pawns capture diagonally. If a pawn reaches the other side of the board, it can be promoted to any piece (usually a queen).
Special Moves:
Castling: The king and a rook can move simultaneously. The king moves two squares toward the rook, and the rook jumps over the king. This move is allowed if neither the king nor the rook has moved before, there are no pieces between them, and the king isn’t in check or moving through check.
En Passant: If a pawn moves two squares forward from its starting position and ends up beside an opponent’s pawn, the opponent can capture it "en passant" (in passing) as if it had only moved one square.
Promotion: If a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it can be promoted to a queen, rook, bishop, or knight (usually a queen).
Check and Checkmate:
Check: When a king is under threat of being captured. The player must move the king out of check, block the threat, or capture the attacking piece.
Checkmate: When the king is in check and cannot escape. This ends the game.
Stalemate:
A stalemate occurs if a player has no legal moves and their king isn’t in check. The game ends in a draw.
Draws:
There are several ways to draw, including:
Stalemate (no legal moves but king isn’t in check).
Insufficient material (neither player has enough pieces to checkmate).
Threefold repetition (the same position occurs three times).
50-move rule (if 50 moves are made without a pawn move or a capture).
Starting the Game:
White always moves first, and players alternate turns. The game continues until one player is checkmated, a draw occurs, or one player resigns.
