競技かるたでは、様々な用語が存在しています。漫画『ちはやふる』やアニメを見ている方の中で、「雰囲気で想像して、何となくこういう感じかな」というように、用語の意味を深く知っていない方などにぜひ知ってもらいたいと思い、重要な用語をピックアップしました。その中でも、この用語を知っておくと競技かるたをスムーズに始めることができるというものを一部紹介します。

'kimari'syllables
100枚ある中で読まれる札の最初の数文字を聞いて判断できる字(音)のこと。競技かるたで勝つためには、まず最初にこの決まり字を暗記する。
In order to win a game of Competitive Karuta, it is necessary to memorize these 'kimari' syllables first.
my territory
試合開始の際、100枚のうち50枚を使用し、その中から無作為に札を25枚取り、自分が取りやすい位置に並べていく。このときに並べた場所を自陣という。
At the beginning of the game, players use 50 cards out of 100 cards, take 25 cards at random and arrange them in the position where they can easily take them, and the place where they are arranged is called their own territory.
opponent's territory
自分自身が並べた配置とは異なり、試合相手が札を並べている場所のこと。
It is a place where the opponent puts his cards, unlike the arrangement where he put his own cards.
winning cards
試合中に読まれる札のこと。
A card that is read during a game.
consecutive wins
連続で相手よりも先に読まれた札を取っていくこと。
To take a card that has been read before the opponent in a row.
'okuri-fuda'
(moved cards)
敵陣の札を取った際に、自陣から札を相手に渡す札のこと。また、相手が自陣の札を取り、敵陣から渡される札の場合も同じ言い方である。
When a player takes a card from the opponent's side, the player passes the card to the opponent from the opponent's side. When the opponent takes a card from the opponent's side and passes the card to the opponent from the opponent's side, the same expression is used.
touching
the wrong card
読まれた札とは違う札を取ってしまった場合のことをいう。
It refers to the case where a player takes a different card from the one read.
'kakomi-te'
札には直接触れずに、札が読まれる際に手で囲うようにして取ること。
To pick up a card by surrounding it with your hand when it is read without touching it directly.
Meijin tournament
男性で競技かるたの日本一を決める大会。
毎年1月に滋賀県にある近江神宮で開催される。
It is a tournament in which men decide the best karuta player in Japan. It is held every January at Omi-jingu Shrine in Shiga Prefecture.
Queens tournament
女性で競技かるたの日本一を決める大会、
名人戦と同じように開催され、毎年多くの人が注目している。
It is held in the same way as the Meijin-sen, a tournament in which women decide the best Karuta player in Japan, and many people pay attention every year.
