The BR Class 455 aka "Spanners" are EMU's that works out of London Waterloo. (Southern also operated them out of Victoria & London Bridge.) They are built by BREL from 1982 to 1985.
They serve the Metro routes out of Waterloo and were originally supposed to be replaced around 2019/2020 but due to the Class 701 delays , it is still yet to happen. Here is some photos of the different variants and their interior's.
Class 455's MK3 body.
Class 455/7 units have a Class 508 TSO attached. The rest of the Class 508's were sent to Merseyrail in Liverpool, they have since been all retired.
The Class 455 interior shows that 455's still have SWT seating. They were never refurbished by SWR as they thought the Class 455's did not have long left with SWR. But again, the Class 701 saga arose.
There are a few diffrences with the Class 508 TSO. The obvious ones being the handle bars, windows and body shape. Also the ceiling is low.
SWT signage is still visible on these units.
Class 455's orignally sounded like any other old EMU. But they were upgraded by SWT with Vossloh Kiepe IGBT-VVVF motors.
