Ice cores can tell us a variety of information about Earth’s climate, atmosphere, and ocean systems in the past and present. They can be drilled from ice sheets all around the world and many are stored right here at the National Science Foundation Ice Core Facility in Lakewood, Colorado. Scientists can look at parts of the ice, such as gasses, dust, and chemical composition to better understand past warming and cooling as well as how this might shape climate change today. A group of eight high school girls spend a week in Alaska's Kenai Fjords National Park learning about glaciers, art, and themselves. Throughout Girls* in Icy Fjords, they not only develop and grow as scientists but also gain confidence in their outdoors skills.
