In understanding gender and sexuality, there is much we can learn from the underwater world: the Ocean embraces indiscriminately, priding itself on the beautifully fluid existence of its many inhabitants. Could we imagine extending the same tenderness to all forms of expression and mutual admiration on land?
This June, we’d like to bring attention to the work of LGBTQ+ artists and practitioners who work within the potent constellations of queer ecologies, guided by queer, feminist and decolonial perspectives for a future that celebrates diversity rather than threatens and marginalizes its very existence.
Let us introduce you to Alimma Cen Cynna, a London-based performing artist, activist and writer. In her work, she uses her Transgender Central Asian identities to question the borders we assign to what is ‘natural’ or ‘artificial’. Oceanic life, a repeating motif, represents for her the oscillating state of queer bodies, and their non-normative interaction with space, time and ancestry.
