Ali D. Kara

I am an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at Florida State University. 

I am broadly interested in decision-making for stochastic systems. My work focuses on approximation and robustness in stochastic control, learning from data, and decision-making under general information structures, with rigorous theoretical guarantees.

Research Interests

• Stochastic control and operations research: Approximation and robustness of decision-making methods, control under partial information, and control of multi-agent systems

• Machine learning: Reinforcement learning and data-driven control, with theoretical guarantees on learning and performance

• Probability theory and applications: Estimation from partial observations, the role of memory in stochastic systems, and interacting agents

Brief Biography

I received my PhD and MSc. degrees from Mathematics and Statistics Department  at Queen's University in 2021 and 2017 advised by Professor Serdar Yuksel, and my B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University in 2016. Between 2021 and 2024, I was a Byrne Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at University of Michigan.
