The Muffled effect dampens the sound of a voice, making it sound as if it is coming from a distance or through a buffer. Muffled voices may be harder to understand but can add the sense that a speaker is far away or speaking through a barrier like a closed door.

The Telephone effect makes the voice sound as if it is coming through a telephone call. It sounds slightly muffled and tinny, with occasional static interference. This is an excellent effect for creating the illusion of a voice on a phone call.

The Robot effect is similar to the autotune effect common in music, which makes the voice singing a song sound like an android. This effect is a great choice for making your voice sound like an inhuman machine.

The game audio track is perfectly isolated, so I figured I can maybe use that track as a mask to remove the matching audio on my mic track, and be left with mostly just my own voice, even if it has some artifacts (maybe I could even run the isolate vocals effect after), I just, have no idea how.

A short time ago I borrowed from a dealer in Washington a littleCapuchin called Puck, and had him sent to my apartments, where I kept aphonograph. I placed the cage in front of the machine upon which I hadadjusted the horn, and had placed the record of my little friend Pedro.I concealed myself[Pg 37] in an adjoining room, where I could watch theconduct of my subject through a small hole in the door. I had a stringattached to the lever of the machine and drawn taut through another holein the door, so that I could start the machine at any desired moment, and at the same time avoid attracting the attention of the monkey, either by my presence or by allowing him to see anything move. After atime, when everything was quiet, I set the machine in motion and treatedhim to a phonographic recital by little Pedro. This speech wasdistinctly delivered through the horn to Puck, from whose actions it wasevident that he recognised it as the voice of one of his tribe. Helooked at the horn in surprise and made a sound or two, glanced aroundthe room and again uttered a couple of sounds as he retired from thehorn, apparently somewhat afraid. Again the horn delivered someexclamations in a pure Capuchin dialect, which Puck seemed to regard assounds of some importance. He cautiously[Pg 38] advanced and made a feebleresponse, but a quick, sharp sound from the horn seemed to startle him,and failing to find any trace of a monkey, except the sound of a voice,he looked at the horn with evident suspicion, and scarcely ventured toanswer any sound it made. When I had delivered to him the contents ofthe record I entered the room again, and this seemed to afford him somerelief.

In the following experiment this sound was used with great effect.Nellie's cage occupied a place in my study near my desk. She would stayawake at night as long as the light was kept burning, and as I havealways kept late hours, I did not violate the rule of my life in orderto give her a good night's rest. About two o'clock one morning, when Iwas about to retire, I found Nellie wide awake. I drew my chair up toher cage, and sat watching her pranks as she tried to entertain me withbells and toys. I tied a long thread to a glove, which I placed in acorner of the room at a distance of several feet from me, but withoutletting her see it. I held one end of the[Pg 91] string in my hand, I drew theglove obliquely across the floor towards the cage. When I firsttightened the string, which I had drawn across one knee and under theother, the glove moved very slightly, and this her quick eye caught atthe very first motion. Standing almost on tip-toe, her mouth half open, she would peep cautiously at the glove, and then in a low whisper wouldsay "e-c-g-k"! And every second or so would repeat it, at the same timewatching me, to see whether I was aware of the approach of this goblin. Her actions were almost human, while her movements were as stealthy asthose of a cat. As the glove came closer and closer she became more andmore demonstrative, and when at last she saw the monster climbing up theleg of my trousers, she uttered the sound aloud and very rapidly, andtried to get to the object, which she evidently thought was some livingthing. She detected the thread with which I drew the glove across thefloor, but seemed in doubt as to what part it played in this act. I sawher[Pg 92] eyes several times follow the thread from my knee to the glove, butI do not think she discovered what caused the glove to move. Having donethis for a few times, however, with about the same result each time, Irelieved her anxiety and fright by allowing her to examine the glove, which she did with marked interest for a moment and then turned away. Itried the same thing over again, but failed to elicit from her theslightest interest after she had examined the glove.

I have learned the food sound in the dialect of the sooty Mangaby, but Ihave not been able to record it sufficiently well to study; but it isone of the most peculiar sounds in the whole range of Simian speech. Thephonetic elements are nearly like "wuh-uh-uh," but the manner in whichit is delivered is very singular. It appears to be intermixed with apeculiar clucking sound, and each sound seems independent of the other, although so closely joined in their utterance as to sound almost likethey were uttered simultaneously by separate means. It is a deepguttural, below the middle pitch of the human voice, while the cluckingelement appears much higher in pitch, and the whole sound is marked witha strong tremolo effect. The syllables are uttered in[Pg 119] rapid succession, and this peculiar sound under different conditions is uttered in atleast three different degrees of pitch about an octave apart, but thecontour appears to me the same in each. This species talks but little,is very shy, makes few friends, and is afraid of the phonograph; hence Ihave never been able to make a good record of its voice. I wascultivating the friendship of Jim, who recently died in Central Park, and we were getting on the best of terms; but the little Mangaby thatsurvives him is very shy and suspicious. Immediately after Jim's death, however, when I would visit the Garden, she would always jump on theperch and take the same position that Jim had occupied whenever I wouldfeed him. During his lifetime, she always kept her distance and neverwould take anything out of my hand, because she was afraid of him; butas soon as he was out of the way she assumed his place, and would utterthe same sound that he had uttered at my approach. She evidently wasaware of[Pg 120] the fact that Jim and I were friends, that I always gave himsomething good to eat at that particular place in the cage, and that healways sat in a certain position when I gave it to him. I do not regardthis species as very intelligent, nor their language as being of a hightype; but they have a very human-like face, almost without hair, andvery large and expressive eyes. They abound in West Africa, and havebeen colonised with success in the island of Mauritius; they are notvery common in captivity, but much more so than some other species ofless interest.[Pg 121]

It is not an uncommon thing for monkeys to discover the means by whichtheir cage is kept fastened, and they have frequently been known tountie a knot in a rope or chain, and thus release themselves. I haveknown a monkey that learned to reach its hand through the meshes of thecage, and withdraw the pin which fastened the hasp and thus open thedoor and get out. The keeper substituted a small wire, which he twistedthree or four times in order that it could not be released. The monkeyrealised that the wire performed[Pg 165] the duties of the pin and preventedthe door from opening. He also knew that the wire was twisted and thatthis was the reason he could not remove it. I have seen him put his handthrough the meshes of the cage, catch the loose end of the wire and turnit as though he was turning a crank. He evidently knew that the twist inthe wire was made by such a motion and his purpose was to untwist it,but so far as I know he never succeeded in doing so. I have frequentlyseen a monkey gather up his chain and measure his distance from where hestood to the point at which he expected to alight, with the skill andaccuracy of an engineer. 006ab0faaa
