Alice Nahyeon Kim is a PhD Candidate at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Information (iSchool). She holds a BA in English Literature and Media Studies from Sookmyung Women’s University (South Korea) and a Master of Information from the iSchool, with dual concentrations in Critical Information Policy Studies (CIPS) and Culture & Technology (C&T). Her doctoral research examines diasporic media, digital journalism, and critical platform studies, focusing on how AI and digital platforms shape journalism and cultural production for local, community, and diasporic outlets.
She is the recipient of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship, 2026–2028), one of Canada’s most competitive national research awards. She has also received the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (2025–2026), a graduate fellowship from the School of Cities at the University of Toronto (2024–2025), and the Korean Government Scholarship Program (2015–2017). Her work has been presented at leading international conferences, including the International Communication Association (ICA), the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), and the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR).
Alongside her academic research, she brings over a decade of professional experience in journalism. She has worked in the documentary department of the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) and at Dong-A Ilbo, one of South Korea’s major newspapers, where she received extensive training in documentary production and newsroom reporting. In Toronto, she continues her practice as a Korean diasporic media reporter, conducting in-depth interviews and producing community-focused stories that amplify cultural narratives and the voices of minority communities.
