Throughout TLI, I considered my own strengths as a communicator and the ways in which I craft messages to our membership. At the start of the process, I considered myself between emerging and developing in this stage, leaning more toward emerging. Most of the communication experience I had was informal and less strategic. I would definitely say I had "shared messages to inspire others," especially in regard to the union. However, most messages I had shared were via email, simply minutes from meetings or updates that I felt were important for my school to know about. Reflect Artifact 1, which I completed early in the TLI process, shows where I started with communication. Throughout the TLI process, I became more conscious of my audience, considering how to construct positive messages that will promote the shared vision of our union. In creating the BEA website, I experimented with different media to convey these messages, considering visual appeal as well as word choice (Design Artifact 5 and Do Artifacts 7, 8 and 10).
Overarching Competency # 2: Technological Facility
Throughout the process of TLI, I realized that using technological facility in a leadership capacity is much different than simply enjoying technology and utilizing it personally. Reflect Artifact 2 is a worksheet I used to reflect on my technological facility leadership skills at the beginning of TLI. At the start of the process, I would place myself as emerging, for the simple reason that I did not really use technology as a way to collaborate or lead others. I used it to create lesson plans and activities, but I did not yet utilize it to help our association expand its capacity. Now, thanks to TLI, I see the BEA website as a way to promote the shared vision of the union and expand our capacity as an organization, and I believe I have moved to the developing stage of this competency (Do Artifact 7).

Foundational Competency: Explore and Challenge Inequity
TLI encouraged me to think more deeply about ways in which I can explore and challenge inequity as a teacher leader. Many of our module assignments focused on this foundational competency. At the start of the process, I would place myself as "developing" in this competency. Exploring and challenging diversity has always been a passion of mine, and I had read quite a few books that had opened my eyes to the ways in which systemic racism, sexism, and classism impact the experiences of everyone in America. However, though I was interested in these topics and cared deeply about dismantling systemic oppression, I struggled to find tangible ways that I could move from simply "exploring" inequity to actually "challenging" it. The reading and reflection activities in the TLI modules helped me to see ways in which I could move my interest in social justice to the next level (Reflect Artifacts 3-6). When creating the website, I considered ways in which I could challenge inequity throughout the process. The two main steps I took to do so were 1) considering and implementing ADA compatibility on each page of the site and 2) writing and incorporating a Land Acknowledgement onto the homepage of the site. (see Design Artifacts 2-3 and Do Artifact 10).
Leadership Pathway Competency: Association - Organizational Effectiveness: Leading with Skill
TLI helped me to truly understand the importance of the association in ensuring quality education for all students. As the association advocates for teachers, ensuring they are treated like the professionals they are, policies will be written that reflect best practices, and quality of instruction will improve as a result. At the start of TLI, I was already actively participating in our association as its secretary, taking the lead on small projects and encouraging others to participate as well, which is why I rated myself as "developing" in this competency. At the end of the TLI process, I would now place myself as "performing," as I have purposefully strengthened the capacity of the association, and have created a website that will help recruit and engage members. Throughout the TLI process, I revised my educational philosophy several times, and have now incorporated a statement about the importance of the association in ensuring quality education for all students (Reflect Artifacts 7 and 8).

What was the most valuable part of the TLI process for you?
The TLI process gave me the motivation to take initiative on a project that really needed to be done for the BEA. Without TLI, I do not believe I would have stepped up to take on the website, and I would not have grown in so many ways as a leader. TLI helped me to understand the different ways teachers can become leaders, and that not all leadership looks the same. As a person who is sometimes hesitant to speak up or take action, I have found ways to be a leader that make the most sense for my personality and natural skill set. What was the most valuable part of the TLI process for you?
What are your next steps to continue your growth as a teacher leader?
I plan to continue to grow as a teacher leader, particularly within the association pathway. I know the path to improving BEA communications will be a long one. I plan to take small, manageable steps to reach out to our membership and make sure everyone is connected and engaged. I will maintain the website, and I plan to post updates about BEA news and events frequently. I will speak with the BEA President and Board about continuing in the role of Communications Director for the BEA, to possibly expand BEA communications to include things like a monthly newsletter and a more robust social media presence. I will also continue to educate myself and hope to pursue further professional development opportunities such as Leaders for Just Schools and possibly National Board Certification. What are your next steps to continue your growth as a teacher leader?
