Welcome to our classroom website!

Greetings from Mrs. Alicea

I've been teaching third grade at Gurganus for 16 years!  The one thing I've learned is that every new year is a brand new opportunity to make loads of memories, friends, and experiences.  I'm so glad we're on this journey together!

For over 95 years Macy’s department store has delighted watchers everywhere with their Thanksgiving day celebration… BUT did you know that balloons were first introduced in the 1920’s only because the live LIONS were frightening the children!?  That’s right, Mr. Macy wanted his parade to be spectacular and exciting so he had live animals as part of his parade, but that plan backfired a bit.  Luckily for us, Tony Sarg saved the day with his balloon idea (or “upside down marionette” as he called them).  Students in Mrs. Alicea class learned all about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade by reading Balloons Over Broadway.  They culminated their research with a STEM project that tasked the students to come up with their own balloon design AND code their own path down 34th Street.

Parents: I've created tutorials to give you the basics on the learning platforms your student will be using.  I know it can be overwhelming, but we've got this!
