It was the unlikeliest of stories. Two waning Pottsvillians were home for the holidays and thirsty for a skunked Chetty in a smokey dive. After all, who wouldn't want to escape the smorgasbord of holiday food to soak their thirsty roots with watered-down Tullemore Dew and cheap beer?
Eric and Alice paths' serendipitously crossed.
It was a completely smooth ride to where they are today. Absolutely no bumps along the way, as all perfect relationships go. They lived out their fairytale life in the romantic and clean city of Philadelphia, advancing their careers, while loving two very fabulous animals (chicken nuggets, if you will), Oscar de la Renta and Mr. Kershaw. Surrounded by nearby friends and family, Eric and Alice took the next step in their adventure.
They went to SPAIN!
An aggressive trip, carefully planned with an immaculate spreadsheet that was quickly thwarted when Eric proposed to Alice on the first, sleep-deprived day. Eric carefully hid his Aunt Verna's ring through TSA and the first half of their day in Madrid. With no anxiousness whatsoever, he trudged on with sights set on proposing at the first opportune moment. Alice suspected that a proposal was on the horizon though. In months prior, Eric helped look for one of her other rings that mysteriously went missing for the exact amount of time it would take to size a girl's finger. As dopic as Alice is, she never loses nice jewelry, she knew........ Momma Dolbin taught her well.
Eric and Alice were in the center of Spain, immersing themselves in the Royal Palace of Madrid Gardens. They had three hours of sleep between them, but their hearts were dancing at the chance to experience Spanish life to its fullest. They walked to a set of steps that looked undyingly magical. They were hand carved, smothered with ivy and begging to be climbed. Alice had tunnel vision at the sight. Eric saw the elation on Alice's face and asked, "Do you want to go up there?"
She said, "Yes."
They got to the top, and lo and behold, just as smooth as their relationship began, it was a romantically clean, construction-ridden service road. Eric stated they should go back down, but before they did... he asked, "Would you do me a favor? Will you marry me?" He got down on one knee, and opened a lovely, little box. Alice fell to her knees with him.
With both of them in tears, kneeling on a service road, she said, "yes."
They hugged together in complete contentment for a few moments until voices in the near distance prompted a quick end to their construction vigil. They picked up their meltingly happy bodies to an another romantic locale. They settled on a sweet garden bench further down the luscious garden lane with noisy peacocks and stately geese surrounding them.
Eric and Alice were engaged.
From there, the immaculate spreadsheet plans were replaced with whimsical Madrid charm, wine, jamón, historic mystique...and, of course, delicious craft beers.
