This website details the use of music in medicine and the capacity to which computer technology can assist and amplify this use.
This is the final product for my Independent Research class (2023-24) at River Hill High School.
This project explores the exciting potential of merging music and technology to create a new frontier in personalized music therapy. Its focus is on harnessing the power of Affective Algorithmic Composition (AAC) to generate music tailored to an individual's emotional state in real-time.
Music has a profound impact on our emotional well-being and music therapy has proven effective in various healthcare settings. However, traditional methods of music therapy lack real-time personalization.
Imagine a system that "reads" your music taste through facial expressions as you listen to a variety of pre-selected music with various differing musical components, and then this same system creates music that perfectly complements your musical taste based on the reactions to specific musical components it has gathered from you. This system wouldn't just "read" your mood, it would learn your musical preferences down to the subconscious level. By listening to a curated selection of music with diverse elements like tempo, melody, and instrumentation, the system would analyze your facial expressions to understand which components resonate most with you. Using this data, it would then create personalized music that perfectly complements your unique taste in real-time.
It's important to note: While the potential applications are vast, this project is currently in its initial stages. The examples used throughout the website showcase the concept, not actual to-the-millisecond-real-time music generation.
Independent Research is a college-level course where students design and conduct original research studies or creative projects in areas of their own interest. They tackle identified problems, answer research questions, and present their findings or creative works to relevant audiences. Throughout the course, students collaborate with and receive continuous feedback from professionals in their chosen fields.
Independent Research at RHHS is absolutely incredible!
